Small businesses have a problem
For years, websites were the purview of larger companies that could hire full time web developers to construct and maintain their websites. As the Internet became more ubiquitous, smaller companies began to need websites. Now, if you have a business -- even if it's something as small as a therapy practice or other single owner-type situation, you need a web presence. The problem for smaller companies was that while they could hire a web developer, making changes to the website involved costly time and often took weeks to accomplish.
We have a solution
To answer this problem, Content Managment Systems were developed. CMSs allow users to make changes to their websites with no more skill than it takes to write a letter with a word processor.
Which CMS is best?
There are a number of CMSs on the market, but we prefer Joomla, one of the leading CMSs available today. Joomla is an open source product, meaning that thousands of people around the world are constantly adding to it, refining it and helping make it a broad platform for outside development. Also, by having such a open source system, you'll never have to worry about a company disappearing -- taking your platform with it. Such instances, while rare, do happen in the software universe.
Additionally, there are thousands upon thousands of add-on products for Joomla. While many are free, some are not, but their cost is still nominal compared to proprietary systems.
Let's take a walk through the world of CMSs to better explain "how it works".
